Helen Moultrie is the fifth child of Vernon and Lydia Doyle. Along with her parents and siblings and their extend family of aunts, uncles, and cousins, she spent much of her childhood raised on the family’s property in St. Mary’s Colony (near Austin, TX). Later, due to her father’s illness, the family moved to drier climate in Vado, New Mexico. In 1946, Helen married Odell Moultrie (a school bus contractor) in Las Cruces, NM, and began a family. In 1952, Odell Moultrie sold his school bus contract and uprooted his young family and followed his pastor to California. In California, Odell and Helen spent the majority of their lives together in the farming business and in ministry. They bought a farm in Madera, California where Helen would often assist her husband in the arduous maintenance of their farming business, including chopping and picking cotton, tractor driving, and so on. Also, at that time, Odell was assistant pastor of Sunrise Church of God in Christ in Madera, California, and served for several years. Later, in 1972, he resigned as assistant pastor, sold his farm, and founded his own church in Fresno, California. As in the farming business, Helen faithfully assisted her husband in ministry of Ebenezer Church of God in Christ for almost thirty year, serving as pastor’s wife and piano player for their congregation until her death in July of 1999 and Odell’s death in December of that same year. They were married almost 53 years.
